Sometimes a team's injury problems force conversations no one expected to have, and the New York Rangers are suddenly living in that space.

With Adam Fox still sidelined week-to-week by a separated shoulder, the Rangers continue leaning heavily on a defense corps stretched to its limits. That tension has fueled a hypothetical trade proposal.
Heavy.com has just released a proposed trade between the New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres, which sees the Rangers trade Brennan Othmann and Braden Schneider to the Blues in exchange for 24-year-old defenseman Bowen Byram.
Rangers Get:
Bowen Byram(D)

Sabres Get:
Brennan Othmann(F)
Braden Schneider(D)

It is a blockbuster idea, the kind of move that instantly shifts a franchise's trajectory. Byram, drafted fourth overall in 2019 by the Colorado Avalanche, is a dynamic, mobile defender capable of logging top-pair minutes. He has 128 points (39G, 84A) in 274 NHL games and brings the blend of skating and creativity that could stabilize the Rangers' blue line during Fox's absence and long after.
With that being said, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman confirmed that Othmann's name has been gaining some interest from organizations earlier this season, and the Rangers are open to the idea of moving him. However, the steep price comes into play as 24-year-old defenseman Braden Schneider's name gets brought up.
Schneider has taken major steps this season, currently paired with Vladislav Gavrikov, he has been leaning into tougher matchups, averaging over 19 minutes a night and showing the poise of a long-term top-four defender.
Moving both would be a massive gamble, one that essentially signals the Rangers are in win-now mode even as they navigate inconsistent results and a transition year.

Would Bowen Byram justify the price for the New York Rangers?

The thought of losing both Othmann and Schneider stings a bit, but the argument for Byram is simple, getting an elite defenseman in today's market just doesn't happen often. However, Bowen Byram is signed to a 2 year, $12,500,000 contract with a cap hit of $6,250,000 per season
Bit of a step price considering the Rangers only have roughly $2.5 Million in cap space.
