Key defenseman Seth Jones left the Winter Classic early between the Florida Panthers and New York Rangers due to a very scary injury.

The Florida Panthers defenseman was struck near the shoulder or collarbone area by a deflected shot at 7:54 of the first period. The puck came off an Alexis Lafrenière attempt and jumped up in a nasty way.
Seth Jones left the game and will not return to the #WinterClassic after catching a puck high in the first period.
Jones headed off shortly after the impact, and Florida ruled him out for the rest of the game with an upper-body injury. That announcement landed like a thud because he's one of their main minute-eaters.
Seth Jones, who was hit in the shoulder or collarbone by a deflected shot at 7:54 of the first period, is out for the rest of the game with an upper-body injury, the Panthers say. Jones left the ice shortly after getting hit by the puck.
It also adds a weird twist to the weekend, because Jones was just named to Team USA's Milano Cortina 2026 roster. You never want to see an Olympic storyline get derailed by a stray puck.

Seth Jones injury hits Winter Classic

For the Florida Panthers, losing Jones mid-game means shorter benches and tougher matchups, especially when New York starts moving pucks low to high. The Panthers have to keep their gaps clean because tired defense pairs give up the middle.
For the Rangers, it's a clear cue to shoot with purpose and hunt rebounds, not overpass the puck into traffic. When a team loses a top defender, the seams open for a few shifts, and good teams pounce.
There's also the human side that sticks with you, because the Winter Classic is supposed to be pure fun, the photos, the rink, the vibe. Seeing a key guy head down the tunnel snaps everyone back to reality fast. However, the Rangers are currently up 3-1 with 10 minutes left of the game.
