NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman released more details today regarding the failed contract negotiations between Artemi Panarin and the New York Rangers. The Russian forward rejected a team-friendly deal in what looks like could end up being a scenario where he's traded, or walks during free agency.

NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman dropped some important information regarding the New York Rangers' contract negotiations with Artemi Panarin.
The 32 Thoughts Podcast host expanded upon the idea that GM Chris Drury took the route the Kings went with Anze Kopitar in the hopes he might accept a discount to stick around.
«the Kings went to him and said «we need you take a little bit less»; at some point this offseason the Rangers had that kind of a conceptual discussion with Panarin; I don't know where that's going to go.

Artemi Panarin's Future With the New York Rangers in Question

At the end of the 2025-26 season, Artemi Panarin's $11.642 million contract will come off the books, allowing the team to pursue high-end forwards like Kirill Kaprizov, Jack Eichel, or Connor McDavid.
While the cap is set to rise from $95.5 million in 2025-26 to $104 million in 2026-27, the Rangers are looking ahead to what could be a pivotal free-agent market in the summer of 2026.

Rumors surrounding the Rangers camp are that the team would be willing to spend quite a sum in order to land a blockbuster talent, like one player mentioned above.
Though we all know their heart is set on Connor McDavid. That isn't a guaranteed scenario that could play out, though.
If the Rangers fail to convince Artemi Panarinto accept a discount like the Kings did with Kopitzer in 2023, signing him to a two-year $14 million average annual value (AAV) deal, they may have to look to other options.
The Rangers have some time to convince Panarin to stick around, but at one point, they will have to consider a trade scenario in order to recoup assets for him.
