Morgan Geekie family matter hit Boston Bruins vs New York Rangers as TD Garden turned into a major rout.
By the third period, the game had basically become survival hockey for the New York Rangers, as the Boston Bruins were up 8-2 with the clock still running, the kind of score that turns every shift into damage control.
Then came the sobering moment that had nothing to do with systems or matchups. The Bruins announced forward Morgan Geekie was done for the day because of a family matter, and he exited the game early.
Bruins announce that Morgan Geekie is done for the day because of a family matter.
It's the reminder fans never like, players are people first. Whatever the reason is, it's private, and the right move is to leave it there.
Geekie leaving matters because he has been a real driver for Boston this season. He leads the Bruins with 25 goals, so having him unavailable for the game should have sparked something for the Rangers, but as we all know, it didn't, as they still took a 10-2 loss.
The Rangers side of this is messy, but it's also pretty clear. When you're already trying to survive a rough afternoon and the other team keeps piling on, any disruption tends to make the building feel even weirder.
Morgan Geekie's family matter gets a significant update
Following the New York Rangers blowout 10-2 loss to the Boston Bruins, head coach Marco Strum provided an Geekie's situation:
"Sturm says Elias Lindholm's exit was precautionary. Also says «all good» with Morgan Geekie. Classifies both as game-time decisions for tomorrow."
For Boston, the on-ice adjustment is simple, spread minutes, keep lines rolling, and let the scoreline do the heavy lifting.
This one will be remembered for the ugly number on the scoreboard, but it's Geekie's early exit that sticks in your throat.
