New York Rangers former first rounder Alexis Lafrenière faces an uncertain future with the team after it was eliminated from playoff contention earlier yesterday.

Rumors have been circulating around the organization over the past several months of major changes that will be expected and Lafreniere's name continues to be mentioned as a possible player that's heading out of town.

Lafreniere's breakout season failed to materialize a second time this year

Many pundits and members of the Rangers organization had high hopes that Lafreniere's breakout season last year would continue into this season. That wasn't the case, and many saw his numbers plummet and failed to help the Rangers at key times.
Last season, he had played 82 games scoring 28 goals with 29 assists for 57 points and was a + 2 with 40 penalty minutes. This season, he has played 80 games scoring 17 goals with 28 assists for 45 points and is a dreadful -14.
He is in the final year of his $2.325 million contract and will then switch over to his seven-year deal that he signed on October 25th, 2024. The total value of the deal is $52.15 million and holds a cap hit of 7.45 million per season.

Teams will be calling Chris Drury for Lafreniere's availability

Despite his hefty contract, teams will be calling general manager Chris Drury for the availability of Lafreniere especially if he makes him available this summer.
Over the next two seasons he will not hold a modified or any trade clause that will allow him to be moved without his permission.
Drury has made it clear that the team needs to be changed and after being shut out of the playoffs, that change is likely to happen on a bigger and wider scale.
The Rangers have two games remaining in the schedule and will be on the road facing both Florida teams where their final game will be played at Amalie Arena against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday April 17th and game time will be 7:00 PM eastern.
