Jack Eichel sweepstakes takes unexpected turn for the better involving the New York Rangers
According to reports from ESPN report Emily Kaplan, the New York Rangers are considered one of the top teams in the Jack Eichel sweepstakes. In an article of the The Hockey News, the Rangers were thought to be one of the teams Vegas Golden Knights center Eichel could be interested in.
Jack Eichel has one year left on his $10 million AAV deal, which he signed with the Buffalo Sabres in 2018-19.
Since his departure from Buffalo, he's been a key piece in the Vegas Golden Knights lineup and won a Stanley Cup with the leadership of Bruce Cassidy.
Now that he's done the impossible, winning the Cup, once thought impossible as a Sabre, Eichel could be turning his eyes to his next home.
The Rangers were listed by Kaplan as one of the teams he'd be interested in joining, along with the Boston Bruins.
«Obviously the Rangers would be very high on the list of teams he'd be interested in along with the Boston Bruins of course.»
The former 2nd overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft has been an important piece in the Vegas Golden Knights' lineup. But with the acquisition of Mitch Marner, it might complicate his relationship with the team.
For the Rangers, they'd have to clear cap space themselves to make it work, as they have $777K in space at the moment.
Though having Eichel and Artemi Panarin on the same roster would be an exciting prospect, Drury will have to work his magic in order to make it happen.
If the Rangers do end up trading for Eichel, they'll have to anticipate future contract demands, and as a former Stanley Cup winner, could end up at the base of $12 million and up, thanks to Mitch Marner's inflated salary.
Eichel could solve the Rangers' center depth issue, taking over for JT Miller, pushing him down to a 2nd-line role. While Eichel and Panarin could carry the first line.
It may take some long-term planning to make this happen, but it's worth a shot.
