Metropolitan Division defenseman placed on waivers: Chris Drury and the Rangers to make a move?

On Thursday, Elliotte Friedman confirmed that veteran defenseman Matt Dumba has been placed on waivers by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Given the Rangers' current situation, it is impossible not to connect the dots.

With Adam Fox still on LTIR and the blue line stretched thin, Dumba suddenly becomes a name Chris Drury has to at least consider.

Dumba, 31, is not the player he was earlier in his career, but he still brings experience, edge, and NHL minutes. He has logged over 700 career games, including deep playoff runs, and is no stranger to handling heavy defensive assignments. For a Rangers team that has leaned hard on Braden Schneider and Vladislav Gavrikov, any added stability matters.

The appeal here is low risk. A waiver claim costs no assets, only cap space, and the Rangers currently have flexibility with Fox, Edstrom and Rempa all sidelined on LTIR. Dumba's right-shot ability is another factor, especially with Scott Morrow coming out of the lineup and the coaching staff clearly prioritizing defensive reliability.

Dumba's recent struggles in Pittsburgh cannot be ignored. His foot speed has dipped, and his decision-making has been inconsistent. That said, context matters. A change of scenery, reduced expectations, and a defined role could help him reset.

The Rangers would not be asking him to replace Fox, only to survive minutes and bring physical pushback. Some will view Dumba as past his prime. Others will see a veteran who can help steady a defense that has looked overwhelmed at times.
