Matt Rempe's return feels closer than it has at any point this season, but the New York Rangers will have to wait at least a little longer.

Rempe practiced in a regular jersey Friday morning, a significant step forward after spending weeks in a red non-contact sweater. Still, head coach Mike Sullivan confirmed the 23-year-old forward will not return for Saturday night's game against the Montreal Canadiens, even though he is trending in the right direction.
Matt Rempe is a full go for today's #NYR practice.
Sullivan described Rempe as «close,» but not quite ready for game action. The Rangers are clearly being cautious with the towering forward, who has been sidelined since October 23 after sustaining an upper-body injury during a heated altercation with San Jose Sharks enforcer Ryan Reaves.
Sullivan says Rempe won't play tomorrow because they want him to get a few practices under his belt at full contact, but added, «He's getting close.»
The fact Rempe is now taking full reps is encouraging. He has progressed steadily over the past week, including travelling with the team to Chicago earlier this month. Friday marked the first time he fully participated without restrictions, an important checkpoint in the recovery process.

Matt Rempe inches closer as New York Rangers exercise patience

Before the injury, Rempe had begun carving out a clear role. His size, forechecking pressure, and willingness to engage physically gave the Rangers a different look in their bottom six. That element has been noticeably absent during a recent stretch of inconsistent play.
Fans have been eager for his return, especially with the Rangers searching for identity and energy following multiple flat performances. Still, Sullivan emphasized the importance of patience, noting that Rempe's game relies heavily on physical contact and durability, making it critical he returns at full strength.
The Rangers' depth has already been tested by injuries to Adam Fox and Adam Edström, leaving little margin for error. Rushing Rempe back would only risk a setback.
