Head coach Mike Sullivan continues to challenge New York Rangers 24-year-old forward Alexis Lafreniere, and it just might be what he needed.

Lafrenière delivered one of his strongest outings in weeks, finishing with a goal and an assist as the Rangers stormed back to defeat the Capitals 7-3. It was a confident performance from the former first overall pick, one that showed patience, puck protection, and assertiveness.
Mike Sullivan noticed. The Rangers head coach said Lafrenière had a strong game, pointing to how he held onto pucks, created quality looks, and stayed involved offensively throughout the night. After a recent scoring drought, it was a welcome sight.
However, Sullivan didn't stop there. Despite the two-point night, the coach reiterated that there is another dimension to Lafrenière's offensive game. It's something the staff has talked about often with him, and something they believe can elevate his impact beyond the box score.
"I thought Laf had a strong game. He's such a talented player as we all know. It's been a struggle for him most recently to score. I thought he had a number of really good looks tonight. He was hanging onto pucks. He was also getting inside the dots and going to the net a little bit more. I think that's got to be a more consistent element of his game. I think he's create more offense if he does. He's very capable. He's strong and he's got good stick skills...There needs to be another dimension to their offense and Laf's offense and that's something that we've had a lot of discussions with Laf about."

Mike Sullivan challenges Alexis Lafrenière consistency

At 24-years-old, Lafrenière is no longer being evaluated as a project. He's a core forward expected to influence games regularly. Sullivan believes Laf has the talent to do that more often, shift after shift.
The coach emphasized that Lafrenière was hanging onto pucks and making plays, but the challenge now is sustaining that presence every night, even when points aren't coming easily. This isn't criticism. It's a belief. Sullivan sees untapped upside and wants Lafrenière leaning into it.
