Mike Sullivan provides a harsh assessment of Scott Morrow as he's scratched from the Rangers lineup
New York Rangers Head Coach Mike Sullivan provided a brutally honest assessment of defenseman Scott Morrow. The assessment happened as NHL Insider Vince Mercogliano asked the coach about why the prospect was scratched from the lineup.
In the last five games for the New York Rangers, defenseman Scott Morrow has been held scoreless. This is while averaging 14:07 minutes a night playing, and is advertised to be a future top-pairing defenseman.
But his lack of effort as of late has earned him a seat in the pressbox, as Head Coach Mike Sullivan has healthy scratched Morrow.
Morrow, who was acquired in a sign-and-trade for defenseman K'Andre Miller, was poised to be an impact player in the lineup.
He was recalled from the Hartford Wolfpack on November 28th.
A 40th overall pick in the 2nd-round of the 2021 NHL Draft, he's played nine games this season and tallied only 1 point (1 A) as a Blueshirt.
Sullivan addressed the scratch with USA Today's Vince Mercogliano:
I asked Sullivan for his evaluation of Morrow after he appeared in 6 of the last 7 games, to which he said, "There's been some good, and then there's been moments where we'd like to see growth."
On the good side: "We like his ability to move the puck. We think he sees it pretty well. He's pretty good along that offensive blue line. He has an ability to get shots through. He's good at finding sticks. An example of that would have been J.T.'s slot tip in the Chicago game. Really good look, good vision, good awareness along the blue line by Scotty. He changes his angle to open up that opportunity to create that play. That's what we've liked about his game."
But Sullivan also rattled off a bunch of areas where the young D-man needs to improve, which I think tells you why the #NYR aren't comfortable expanding his role yet: "Making decisions with conviction and having good reads, getting inside the dots when he's coming off the offensive blue line and defending the rush aggressively, his play at the net front in our own end, killing plays in the D-zone (and) in the corners, just closing, taking away time and space, going stick-to-puck, when to have one hand on your stick or two hands on your stick.",

It appears that the Rangers need more from the young blueliner whom they sent a former 1st-round pick to the Carolina Hurricanes for in trade.
The New York Rangers scratch defenseman Scott Morrow after disappointing play in the last 7 games
This comes a day after the Rangers and Mike Sullivan have experienced major controversy online after removing Morrow from the lineup.
He still has a learning curve to go through to develop into the right kind of player the Rangers want in a blueliner.
The 23-year-old defenseman will have to work on the areas Sullivan mentioned in the interview above, which looks to be on the backcheck, where he needs to improve the most. How will he do that by being scratched?
