New York Rangers defenseman Matthew Robertson will be scratched from the lineup vs the Utah Mammoth following his stunning ice time during the 2026 Winter Classic.

On Friday, the New York Rangers beat the Florida Panthers 5-1 in the 2026 Winter Classic, and Robertson logged 21:50 to lead Rangers defensemen. That kind of trust usually buys you another start.
It wasn't empty cardio either, Robertson played 18:00 at even strength and 3:50 shorthanded across 28 shifts.
However, according to the Rangers lineup projections, they have Urho Vaakanainen sliding into the third pair with Braden Schneider. Leaving Robertson being the odd man out. Along with the Rangers' morning skate, Robertson was one of the last ones on the ice, meaning he's likely not playing.
Berard and Robertson are the last two skaters on the ice, so that pretty much confirms they'll be the scratches tonight. #NYR

Mike Sullivan has been chasing a calmer third pair for months, and Utah's rush game forces decisions fast at the blue lines. If your first pass wobbles, the Mammoth are already hunting the middle.
Still, benching a 24-year-old right after he led your blue line in minutes feels like whiplash. Fans are already calling it ridiculous, especially coming off a signature outdoor win.
The matchup is tight in the margins, Utah's penalty kill is 81.8 percent and the New York Rangers' faceoff rate is 53.8 percent. With J.T. Miller still on injured reserve, the puck management has to be cleaner by committee.
Artemi Panarin drives the offense with 44 points, while Utah counters with Dylan Guenther's 20 goals and the Keller, Schmaltz group creating off the rush. This one can flip fast if the third pair chases.
Igor Shesterkin gets the net again after stopping 36 shots in Miami, and the Rangers are 20-18-5 trying to build a real run. Watch that first five minutes, because that's where the lineup decision gets answered.
