NHL faces immense backlash after providing further details of questionable play during the New York Rangers 7-3 victory over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night.
The NHL has now provided further clarification on why Igor Shesterkin's spectacular glove save against the Washington Capitals was overturned and ruled a goal, but for many fans, the explanation has only added fuel to the fire.
According to the NHL Situation Room, Dylan Strome's power play shot fully crossed the goal line before Shesterkin's glove pulled it back. That ruling stood after review, despite how unbelievable the save looked in real time.
The league released a single still image showing the puck barely over the line. That image became the foundation for the final decision, even though broadcast angles and slow-motion replays left plenty of room for debate.
One photo, one frame, and no extended video breakdown feels insufficient given the magnitude of overturning such a remarkable play.
NHL review leaves New York Rangers fans unconvinced
Replay reviews are supposed to eliminate doubt. In this case, doubt exploded instead. Many still believe there wasn't conclusive evidence to say the puck fully crossed the line beyond question, or that the image they used was "fake" as it doesn't line up correctly with the replay.
However, here's a look at the NHL's supporting image and explanation that were shared publicly on Wednesday.
To be fair, the NHL Situation Room follows strict standards. If the puck is over the line by even a fraction, it's a goal. Rules are rules. But perception matters. When fans only see a single still frame, trust erodes, even if the call is technically correct.
At the end of the night, it doesn't matter too much as the New York Rangers managed to shrug it off and put up five unanswered goals in the third period to take a much-needed 7-3 victory before the Christmas break.
