As the NHL season quickly approaches another 23 players have been placed on waivers, including two former New York Rangers hitting the waiver wire on September 28th.

Sunday afternoon the NHL seen a total of 23 players be placed on waivers for the purpose of assignment. However, two of the 23 players just so happen to be former Rangers who have been placed on waivers because of the Buffalo Sabres.
Those two players being defenseman Zac Jones and forward Jake Leschyshyn.

Former New York Rangers Struggle To Crack Opening-Night Roster

It appears both former New York Rangers players, Jones and Leschyshyn, won't be making the Buffalo Sabres opening-night roster.
With that being said both players left the Rangers organization after season, as the Rangers decided not to extend qualifying offers. Resulting in both of them signing with the Buffalo Sabres as free agents.
In 46 games last season with the Rangers, Jones recorded one goal, 10 assists, 11 points, and 46 blocks. He also scored one goal in two games for the Rangers' AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, in 2024-25. In 115 games over five seasons with the Blueshirts, he posted four goals, 24 assists, 28 points, and a minus-10 rating.

Leschyshyn played in 14 games with the Rangers from 2022-23 to 2023-24, where he had zero points, 17 hits, and a minus-4 rating.

I honestly believed Jones would have made the the Sabres opening-night roster, but clearly that isn't the case. Now both players have the chance to be claimed off waivers or return to the Sabres AHL affiliate and work hard to prove they belong in the NHL.
