Former New York Rangers forward Alexander Wennberg just got paid big-time money by the San Jose Sharks following the latest announcement.
The San Jose Sharks have announced on Sunday that Wennberg signed a three-year extension worth $18 million, a clean $6 million cap hit per season. He was set to be a UFA this summer, so this is the Sharks planting a flag at center.
The 31-year-old Swede has 26 points in 41 games this season, with seven goals and 19 assists.

Rangers fans know the name because Wennberg wore the famous Blueshirt late in 2023-24 after arriving from Seattle at the deadline. He put up five points in 19 regular-season games for for the New York Rangers.
The real memory, though, is spring hockey, because Wennberg scored an overtime winner against Florida in the 2024 Eastern Conference Final. It was one of those depth moments that turns into a forever clip.

Personally, I'm happy for him, but I also hate seeing a useful playoff piece get paid somewhere else.
From the Sharks' side, the logic is simple and pretty smart. Wennberg is a steady two-way center who can handle matchups, keep plays alive down low, and feed skill wingers without freelancing.
His background supports that profile, too, because he was the 14th overall pick in 2013 by Columbus. He's never been a pure shooter, but his passing and defensive detail have aged well.
For the Rangers, it's another reminder that deadline rentals are usually just that. Wennberg gave them a real shift-saver down the middle, then the market moved and he found a longer runway in San Jose.
