The New York Rangers' connection to Quinn Hughes always felt like a long shot, but Elliotte Friedman's latest comments on '32 Thoughts Podcast' might have closed the door entirely.

With the Vancouver Canucks now publicly seeking a young, top-end center in any deal for their 26-year-old captain, Friedman made it clear that he does not «see the trade match» with New York.
"I know there've been suggestions about the Rangers, but I don't see the trade match."
That line hits hard for a Rangers team scrambling to stay afloat without Adam Fox, who remains on LTIR with a separated shoulder. The Rangers were floated as a possible suitor earlier this week, first by David Pagnotta, who said it «wouldn't shock» him if Chris Drury tried to take a swing at Hughes. The idea picked up steam quickly, fueled by Fox's absence and the team's recent inconsistency.
"Another team to look out for is the New York Rangers; it wouldn't shock me to see the Blueshirts taking a swing"
But Vancouver's demands reveal the reality. They are not moving Hughes for futures or positional depth. They want a premium young center, the kind that becomes a franchise pillar.

Elliotte Friedman sees «no match» between Rangers and Canucks on Hughes

New York is deep on the wings and developing defensemen, but they do not possess a young, top-end center. Mika Zibanejad is 32. Vincent Trocheck is 32. Noah Laba is promising, but nowhere near the tier Vancouver is targeting.
Friedman's assessment reflects that gap. Without the core asset Vancouver requires, New York simply cannot enter the conversation. The Canucks are not conducting a fire sale, they are exploring a blockbuster that shifts their long-term structure.
For now, the Rangers must look elsewhere if they want blue-line help. Hughes would have solved problems overnight, but the price tag was always towering, and Vancouver has now confirmed it.
