New York Rangers roster needs, trade timing, and missed opportunities collided just before the roster freeze.
Moments before the NHL roster freeze, the Los Angeles Kings completed a trade sending Phillip Danault to the Montreal Canadiens. While the Rangers were not involved in the deal, the move immediately caught attention in New York for one simple reason, Danault checked several boxes the Rangers desperately need filled.
Danault, 32, is known as one of the league's most reliable two-way centers. He can match up against top lines, win faceoffs, kill penalties, and still contribute offensively. Those skills have been sorely lacking for stretches of this Rangers season.
The Canadiens, a familiar stop in Danault's career, moved quickly to bring him back, valuing his defensive awareness and leadership down the middle. For the Kings, the move cleared cap space and reshaped their forward group before the freeze.
Chris Drury and the New York Rangers miss out once again
Danault has consistently hovered around the 40 to 55 point range while taking on elite defensive assignments. That balance is rare and valuable, especially for a Rangers team that often asks too much of its top forwards.
With the Rangers battling scoring inconsistency and line imbalance, a center like Danault could have stabilized matchups and freed others into more offensive roles. He also carries a manageable contract relative to his impact, making him a realistic target.
Chris Drury's restraint isn't necessarily wrong. Assets matter, and timing matters. But watching Montreal pounce on a known commodity highlights how thin the Rangers' margin feels right now.
The roster freeze closed the door on this possibility, at least for now. Danault is off the board, and the Rangers move forward with what they have.
