The Washington Capitals delivered troubling news Saturday as rookie forward Ryan Leonard has officially been ruled out for an extended period, two days after absorbing a violent hit from former New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba.

The collision occurred Friday night and immediately ignited debate across the league. Trouba stepped into Leonard behind the net, making forceful contact that many believe struck directly at the head. Leonard remained down on the ice before slowly exiting with the help of medical staff.
The play drew outrage not only for the hit itself but for the officiating that followed. Trouba received no penalty, while Washington was assessed a minor for retaliating moments later.
However, things got worse as Capitals coach Spencer Carbery confirmed on Sunday morning that Leonard will miss significant time, calling the injury «a tough blow for the kid and for our group.» Leonard, 20, has been one of Washington's brightest young players, producing energy and physical edge in his first NHL season.

League pressure grows as Trouba escapes penalty and review questions arise

It is hard to ignore the frustration surrounding this incident. Trouba's history with borderline hits, combined with slow-motion angles of Friday's collision, has fueled calls for supplemental discipline.
Yet, as of Sunday, the NHL's Department of Player Safety has not issued any punishment.
That lack of action only intensified criticism, especially given the league's stated emphasis on eliminating direct head contact. Leonard's extended absence now raises even more questions about what constitutes a reviewable or suspendable play.
