NHL Insider Mollie Walker of the New York Post asked Rangers Head Coach Mike Sullivan for an honest evaluation of Conor Sheary's performance this season. His statement on the former Stanley Cup winners' play has fans puzzled.
The New York Rangers signed former Stanley Cup winner Conor Sheary to a one-year contract this summer.
This was another addition from Mike Sullivan's past to the Rangers roster this season, as the Blueshirt reunited the Stanley Cup-winning duo.
Sheary, who had shown himself to be a great depth option for NHL teams the past two seasons, hasn't had as much impact as fans had hoped.
Mike Sullivan provided us with an assessment of his play this season, speaking to the New York Post's Mollie Walker:
Conor Sheary's Performance for the New York Rangers has been underwhelming
In 22 games with the New York Rangers, he's scored a total of 5 points (5 A).
A disappointing showing for someone whose occupied a spot on the third line with rookie Noah Laba. Laba has been a bright spot for the team this year, pushing himself into a regular role in the NHL.
Though Sheary's PTO was converted into a full-time contract, giving the team hope he'd find is game again.
He spent all of last season in the AHL with the Syracuse Crunch, scoring 61 points (20-41), and has struggled as a Rangers forward this season.
For the Rangers to attain the kind of success they have reached before (Presidents' Trophy), they'll need Sheary to become a reliable contributor.
So far, he's not been great at adding secondary scoring, and with news of Gabe Perreault heating up in the AHL, there remains another option in Hartford.
The 615 game NHL forward's prime has passed long ago, and maybe it's time to recognize he belongs in a purely checking role.
